Last week in science!

Monday, April 8th

Today in science: We used today’s lesson to sharpen an important scientific measurement skill: length. With the help of a centimeter ruler, students were asked to measure 8 lines in centimeters and 8 lines in millimeters with both accuracy and precision. While most students were quite accurate when measuring the 16 lines, many were not as precise as they could have been. With the help of the video tutorial shown below, students saw how to be more precise when using a centimeter ruler. They learned that making precise length measurements with a centimeter ruler depends on how they handle a line that falls 1) directly on a millimeter mark, and b) somewhere in between two millimeter marks. A special emphasis was placed on the appropriate number–and value–of digits to write to the right of the decimal point.

Homework: Students have been asked to practice their new ruler skills by a) measuring thick, dark bars with their own ruler, b) measuring thin lines with an already present ruler, and c) drawing thin lines that reflect a pre-determined length.

Tuesday, April 9th

Today in science: After turning in last night’s homework assignment (the 3 measuring practice worksheets), students were asked to measure a line series in millimeters. Dr. M then explained an important relationship between centimeters rulers (which make use of a horizontal scale) and thermometers (which make use of a vertical scale). After being asked to read 10 practice thermometers, there was a brief discussion about error and precision when using these measuring instruments. In the remaining class time, students saw a demonstration in which some KMnO4 was put–with help of a glass pipet–into two different water ‘baths’: iced water and boiling water. Students had the opportunity to see the behavior of the liquid KMnO4 molecules in the different temperature liquid H2O molecules. This demonstration set the stage for tomorrow’s personal in-class investigations.

Wednesday, April 10th

Today in science: There was brief discussion at the start of the lesson about the (graded) homework that was in each students’ mailbox. Much of this discussion was about the difference–when using a centimeter ruler–between accuracy and precision. Students then formed teams of 3-4 students and planned for tomorrow (Thursday’s) mini-investigations, in which the teams will be given a sample of KMnO4 (liquid), a glass pipet, plastic pipets (2 : 1 mL, 3 mL), standard test tubes (3), 250-mL glass beakers (3), and graduated cylinders (3 : 10 mL, 50 mL, 100 mL), as well as access to a Bunsen burner, a tripod, a heating tile, and wire gauze.

Thursday, April 11th

Today in science: Experiment day! Students were given the entire period to design and perform short investigations with a predetermined set of materials and equipment.

Friday, April 12th

Today in science: Unfortunately, A period science does not meet on Fridays. 😦
