G6 Week 10

Last week in science!

Monday, November 9th

Today in science: Students were given the entire class period to work on their “What I Know About the Human Mouth” thematic essay. As announced in class, Dr. M has created a (blank) Google Document in the Google Science Classroom in which students should type their new-and-improved second draft–for most students, the first draft was written by hand.

Homework: Dr. Merritt asked all 6th grade science students to give 20 minutes of attention to the second draft of their Human Mouth Essay so that it takes another step closer to its completion. Although it does not need to be finished before tomorrow’s science class, it should be one step closer to its completion. Remember, the way we are organizing this science essay is around a theme we called “structure/function.” Also remember that the second draft of the Human Mouth Essay is to be done electronically in the Google Science Classroom.

Tuesday, November 10th

Today in science: In an attempt to help students move from their first draft to their second (new and improved) draft, Dr. M worked with students individually to help them develop their ideas–as well as their writing–about the human mouth. Every time a student announced she (or he) was “finished,” Dr. M either asked questions or suggested resources, actions, and/or strategies aiming to improve the quality of the final essay.

Homework: Dr. Merritt asked all 6th grade science students to give 20 minutes of attention to the second draft of their Human Mouth Essay before Thursday’s science class. By THURSDAY this essay should be mostly finished, which means it should be proofread for spelling and grammar errors and then typed into the assigned document in the Google Science Classroom. It should be a final product of which students are proud–it should put your deep knowledge of the human mouth on full display!!! Remember, as discussed extensively in our last two classes, the way we are organizing this science essay is around a theme we called “structure/function.”

Thursday, November 12th

Today in science: Students were given the period to work on their “What I Know About the Mouth” essay, which is due by the start of Friday’s science class.

Homework: Students were told in class that their Thematic Essay (Human Mouth) is due before their next science class.

Friday, November 13th

Today in science: Dr. M used today to share two grading sheets with students. First, he gave students the grading sheet he used to mark their lab notebooks. After explaining to students how to interpret the scores listed on this sheet, Dr. M asked students to insert the page into their lab notebook and enter it into their Table of Contents. Second, he gave students the grading sheet generated by Veracross, on which students could see their midterm science grade with scores for all of their assignments (and assignment types). Students can use this sheet to identify any missing Lab Notebook assignments that still require completion/attention.

Homework: The only students who have science homework this weekend are students who have not yet completed and/or submitted their Thematic Essay (Human Mouth) to the Google Science Classroom.
