Lesson 1 - Monday, Sep 8
Housekeeping: Receive and label a school-supplied Science Journal (SJ).
- Students are still expected to bring their own Science Notebook (SN) for regular use inside–and outside–of class this year. It must be an A4-size notebook containing horizontally-lined (writing) paper. It is better NOT to purchase a notebook held together by spiral metal wire (or that contains perforated paper). The best notebooks will have a stapled or stitched binding and contain 60 or more pages. The notebook should also be able to be covered by an inexpensive plastic protective cover.
1. QW#1 – Try answering the Unit 7.1 Driving Question (see below)
2. DQ2 (Bits of rock) – Crystals and grains
3. RA2 (Rock groups) – A practical investigation utilizing the Descriptive method
- Students were asked to submit a completed RA2 to the Google Science Classroom.
Homework: B period students need to complete and submit RA2 before the start of Tuesday’s science class (i.e., Lesson 2). H period students need to complete and submit RA2 before the start of Wednesday’s science class (i.e., Lesson 2).
Lesson 2 - Tue, Sep 9 (B) & Wed, Sep 10 (H)
1. QW#2 – Ideas about sedimentary rock location (where?) and origin (how?)
2. DQ3 (What is a rock?) + DQ4 (Is it a rock?) + DQ5 (What is a mineral?) + DQ6 (Rock or mineral?)
3. Fact Mining activity – What scientific facts have we encountered during the DQs and RAs completed thus far that might help us improve our Initial models?
- Students can access the Fact Mining work we did during class in the G7 Notes Portal.
Homework: There is no science homework tonight.
Lesson 3 - Wed, Sep 10 (B) & Thu, Sep 11 (H)
Housekeeping: Students are expected to bring their own Science Notebook (SN) for regular use inside–and outside–of class this year.
- It must be an A4-size notebook containing horizontally-lined (writing) paper.
- It is better NOT to purchase a notebook held together by spiral metal wire (or that contains perforated paper).
- The best notebooks will have a stapled or stitched binding and contain 60 or more pages.
- The notebook should also be able to be covered by an inexpensive plastic protective cover.
1. QW – There is no QW today.
2. DQ – There are no DQs today.
3. Fact Mining activity – What scientific facts have we encountered during the DQs and RAs completed thus far that might help us improve our Initial models?
- Students can access the Fact Mining work we did during class in the G7 Notes Portal. The teacher’s expectation is that students will 1) capture these notes in Noteability and/or in writing on paper, and 2) create two separate Mind Maps in their Science Notebook–one focused on “ROCKS” and the other focused on “MINERALS”–on pages facing each other (the purpose of this particular organization is to be able to connect the two Mind Maps if/when needed).
- Students can do their mind mapping work in Notability (or in another iPad program of their choice), BUT printed copies of the mind maps must be printed and added to the Science Notebook by a date to be specified by the teacher.
Homework: There is no science homework tonight.
Lesson 4 - Thu, Sep 11 (B) & Fri, Sep 12 (H)
Housekeeping: Science Notebook (SN) check-in and notebook reminder (bring notebooks to Monday’s class).
1. QW – There is no QW today.
2. Fact Mining activity – Continued from Lesson 3…
- Present the Science Notetaking Cycle: Line-by-line notes -> Concept Map -> Paragraph.
- Explain how the TASIS Effort scale can be used with our Notetaking Cycles and presented in the Science Notebook.
- Discuss tools to support the work we do in our Science Notebooks (e.g., make use of the Grade 7 Notes Portal, make Concept Maps in Canva or Noteability, use highlighters to assignment hierarchies to concepts, etc.).
Homework: As per the TASIS MS school homework policy, there is no weekend science homework (due on Monday).
Announcements...
The DRIVING QUESTION of our current unit is: How does the Earth recycle and remake the materials of our planet, from the deep core to the surface we walk on?
#1 - Dr. Merritt would like every science student to have an A4-sized notebook to use in science class this year. The notebook should be well-bound and contain lined (not graphing) paper. If possible, Dr. M would also like students to have a plastic cover for their notebook.
#2 - ...
