Lesson 1 - Monday, Oct 21
Today in science: As Dr. M was absent for Lessons 3 & 4 last week, today was a day for picking up and organizing the ‘pieces’ from those two lessons. Students were given the entire lesson to work on the assignments given to them by last week’s Guest/Cover Teacher(s). They two required textbook assignments:
8Kb– “Cameras and Eyes,” pp. 150-51, Questions 1abc, 2abc, 3ab, 4, 5, 6, 7
8Kc – “Mirror Image,” pp. 152-53, Questions 1, 2ab, 3, 4, 5
If/when students completed and submitted those two assignments, they were then asked to continue working on the following handouts:
8Ja-1 – “Light on the move”
8Ja-4 – “At the cinema 1”
8Ja-6 – “At the cinema 2”
Homework: There is no science homework tonight.
Lesson 2 - Tuesday, Oct 22
Today in science: Students were given the two diagrams from their Light unit test with a completed grading rubric. They could then see their two scores for this in-class assessment by matching their scores to the grading chart posted on the side of the science lab. In this activity, students were shown what a scientific diagram might look like for both the Pete and the Teacher situation. Students then had time ask questions and to think about whether or not they might wish to attempt this assessment–or at least one resembling it in the most important ways–again.
Homework: ATTENTION D period science students!
Towards the end of Tuesday’s science class, we talked about finishing the 8Kb “Cameras and Eyes” questions 1-7 (pp. 150-51) for Wednesday’s science class. You no longer need to do this assignment for homework on Tuesday night. We will make some time during Wednesday’s science class to finish any remaining questions together. The reason for this is because many of you may have accidentally left your science notebook in the science classroom AND because the textbook you needed to finish these questions properly–the one with the snow-covered primate on the cover (it’s called a “macaque,” if you must know)–is also in the classroom. This is why you do not see this assignment on Veracross tonight.
E period students have already submitted this assignment, thus it was never homework for them.
Lesson 3 - Wed, Oct 23 (D) & Thu, Oct 24 (E) - Dr. M absent
Today in science: With a Guest/Substitute teacher, students started watching an educational NOVA (PBS) video titled, “Treasures of the Earth – Gems.” During the video, were asked to do two drawing-based activities called “Modelling Diamonds” in their science notebook. These light ray-based drawings are meant to explain two different–and interesting!–phenomena seen in diamonds: brilliance and fire (or sparkle).
Homework: There is no science homework tonight.
Lesson 4 - Friday, Oct 25 - Dr. M absent
Today in science: With a Guest/Substitute teacher, continued watching an educational NOVA (PBS) video titled, “Treasures of the Earth – Gems.” At the end of the fire/sparkle portion of the video, students were asked to make one final addition to their science notebooks. The teacher posed the following questions to students and asked them to write (numbered) answers/responses in their notebooks:
- Q#1: How is a carefully cut and polished diamond LIKE a mirror?
- Q#2: How is a carefully cut and polished diamond NOT LIKE a mirror?
- Q#3: How is a carefully cut and polished diamond LIKE a one-way mirror?
- Q#4: How is a carefully cut and polished diamond NOT LIKE a one-way mirror?
- Q#5: What is something you still wonder about carefully cut and polished DIAMONDS?
- Q#6: What is something you still wonder about MIRRORS?
- Q#7: What is something you still wonder about ONE-WAY MIRRORS?
With the Grade 6 TASIS Swiss Adventure trips happening during all of next week, students will come back to this lesson on Monday, 4 November.
Homework: There is no weekend science homework.
