THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE!

FS – G7 Week 17

Lesson 1 - Monday, Dec 15

Housekeeping: At the start of today’s lesson, Dr. M made a couple of important announcements about the Odysseus The Grain science essays based on his ongoing effort to grade them.

In addition to working on their A3-sized Water Cycle models, students spent today adding key elements to their model to show the phenomenon known as acid rain. Students were asked to include the following…

  1. Cause(s) – What are the causes/sources of acid rain? (Hint: Some causes might be considered ‘natural’ while others might be considered uniquely human!)
  2. Chemistry – What chemical compounds or molecules result in the production of acid rain (and what are their chemical names and simplified formulae)?
  3. Effect(s) – What types of effects/consequences can acid rain have on living and non-living things?

Homework: There is no science homework tonight.

Lesson 2 - Tue, Dec 16 (B) & Wed, Dec 17 (H)

Housekeeping: B and H periods followed two slightly different lessons…

B period Using the resources provided in Google Science Classroom, students continued working on their Water Cycle and Acid Rain models in preparation for Lesson 3’s practice questions. Dr. M also showed students some simple demonstrations of condensation (with a piece of acrylic held over a beaker of hot water), evaporation (by creating denser clouds with the help of some hair spray), and both percolation and surface runoff (with the help of some plastic cups filled with dry sand).

H period – Students completed two practice quizzes–one about the Carbon cycle and the other about the Water cycle–using the Exam.net tool. We then used our answers to the questions to improve our Carbon cycle models.

Homework: There is no science homework tonight.

Lesson 3 - Wed, Dec 17 (B) & Thu, Dec 18 (H)

Homework: As is specified in the TASIS MS Homework Policy, there is no science homework to be done during the Winter Vacation.

Announcements...

The DRIVING QUESTION of our current unit is: How do chemical substances move through Earth's atmosphere, water, and land to change the planet we live on?

B period homework collection days: Tuesday & Thursday.

H period homework collection days: Wednesday & Friday.

Including this week, there are 3 weeks of school to complete before the end of the Fall Semester.
