THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE!

SS – G6 Week 08

Lesson 1 - Monday, Mar 17 (No School - PT Conferences)

Today in science:

Homework: —

Lesson 2 - Tuesday, Mar 18

Today in science: To finish INVs #7 and #8, Dr. M asked students to be sure they have addressed the final three tasks of these two complimentary investigations: 1) It reminds me of…, 2) What’s it made of?, and 3) Wonderings. Students were then given a model of both the acid, citric acid, and the alkali, sodium bicarbonate, we had put into our mouths during the investigations. These models were molecular models, that is, they showed how scientists think of the acid and the alkali in terms of their atoms. During this exercise, students identified and counted the atoms and saw the relationship between these numbers and something we called the “chemical formula.”

Lesson 3 - Wed, Mar 19 (D) & Thu, Mar 20 (E)

Today in science: Working in small groups, students created a Before-and-After (initial) model showing what they think happens if/when we combine citric acid with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in our mouths. In creating this model, students can be wrong without consequence as at this stage of the project it’s OK if students don’t know what happens when (mentally) performing this phenomenon. After creating their models, student teams presented their ideas to their peers while Dr. M made notes drawing attention to similarities and differences in students’ ideas. We will use these models to imagine/create–and then perform–investigations to test our ideas in the coming days/week.

Lesson 4 - Friday, Mar 21

Today in science: We completed a significant part of INV#9 (Combining an Acid and an Alkali) during today’s lesson. This required students to do work in their science notebook, but also on three observation-based handouts that will become a part of the notebook on Monday.
