THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE!

SS – G6 Week 08

Lesson 1 - Monday, Mar 11 (All periods)

Focus Question: What happened Simone’s foot during his paragliding accident?

What We Did…

We had a special visitor to today’s science class, a staff member of the TASIS Science Department who injured himself very badly during a paragliding accident in September 2022. Simone visited the class to tell students the story of his injury, his surgeries, his physical therapy, and his still ongoing recovery process. We also saw post-operation photos of his foot including his X-rays and images of the pin system holding his fractured bones in place. Students had the opportunity to ask lots of questions and, if they wished to, touch his scars and feel the metal plates and screws still remaining in his shin.

B period students received their graded 6.2 Driving Question essay, but there was not much time to discuss the grading rubric so we said we would do that at the start of Lesson 2.

Homework: As discussed in Monday’s B period science lesson (but not in E & G periods!), those students choosing to make revisions to their 6.2 Driving Question essays need to do so by Friday, 15 at 16:00All essay revisions (2nd draft) must be typed and submitted through the Google Science Classroom.

  • If a student submits their essay revisions AFTER this due date, Dr. M cannot guarantee that these revised essay grades will be incorporated into the Spring Semester midterm grades. In other words, although late revisions will still be able to affect the final Spring Semester science grade, they will NOT be able to affect the midterm science grade.

Lesson 2 - Tues, Mar 12 (B & E) & Wed, Mar 13 (G)

Focus Question: —

What We Did…

After finishing explaining the (detailed and very helpful!) 6.2 Driving Question Essay rubric, students had the remaining part of the science lesson to begin making changes (revisions) to their essays.

Homework: As discussed in Tuesday’s E period and Wednesday’s G period science lesson, those students choosing to make revisions to their 6.2 Driving Question essays need to do so by Friday, 15 at 16:00All essay revisions (2nd draft) must be typed and submitted through the Google Science Classroom.

Lesson 3 - Wed, Mar 13 (B) & Thurs, Mar 14 (E & G)

Focus Question: What happened in the student’s foot so they could walk again?

What We Did…

B period: Students were given a highly condensed, table (row-and-column) version of the injury timeline they created last week. Students were asked to cut and glue this table into their science notebooks in a new entry titled, “Healing Timeline.” Before the end of the lesson we annotated the empty boxes of the timeline with statements about healing and added–when suggested by two students–two additional rows for “Feeling (Nerves)” and “Pain.”

E & G period: Dr. M let the shortened (50-minute) class be used entirely for working on the 2nd draft of the 6.2 Driving Question Essay. This is mainly because E & G periods received their graded 1st drafts one or two days after B period and thus had less time to make revisions before the final due date (Friday).

Homework: As discussed in previous science lessons, those students choosing to make revisions to their 6.2 Driving Question essays need to do so by Friday, 15 at 16:00All essay revisions (2nd draft) must be typed and submitted through the Google Science Classroom.
