THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE!

SS – G7 Week 12

Lesson 1 - Monday, Apr 22 (Day 7)

Focus Question: What is the life cycle of a flowering plant?

What We Did…

Students were given time to collect data–both through making measurements and taking photographs–of both their soil- and petri dish-based plants. All data was to be added to students’ data logs, which are in the Google Science Classroom.

Also, Dr. M announced there will be a two-part quiz on Friday and showed students resources to help them prepare for it. In PART 1, which will be a matching format, students will be asked to match the following words with their definitions: seed, seed coat, radicle, root hairs, hypocotyl, cotyledon, true leaf/leaves, and germination. In PART 2, students will be given unlabelled diagrams of a seed and a young seedling, students and asked to label them accurately.

Homework: Students should use their time outside of class to begin preparing for Friday’s Seed(ling) quiz.

Lesson 2 - Tuesday, Apr 23 (Day 8)

Focus Question: What is the life cycle of a flowering plant?

What We Did…

During the lesson, we measured plants (and recorded the results in our log), took photos (and inserted the photos into our other log), edited our photos (e.g., cropping, resizing), wrote photo captions (in which we tried to practice using our vocabulary words and explain their functions), and then used any remaining time to prepare for Friday’s science quiz.

Homework: Students should use their time outside of class to prepare for Friday’s Seed(ling) quiz.

Lesson 3 - Wednesday, Apr 24 (Day 9)

Focus Question: What is the life cycle of a flowering plant?

What We Did…

We took a break from measuring and photographing our plants today and instead turned our attention to modelling the three earliest stages of the life of fast-growing mustard plant (Brassica rapa): seed, seedling, and young plant. In our modelling, we focused on mapping the inputs and outputs based on the definitions of the plant parts found in the SCIENCEsEDiment Glossary.

Homework: Students should use their time outside of class to prepare for Friday’s Seed(ling) quiz.

Lesson 4 - Friday, Apr 26 (Day 11)

Focus Question: What is the life cycle of a flowering plant?

What We Did…

After completing the multi-part Seed(ling) quiz, students used the remainder of the lesson to measure their plants (and record them in their log), take photos (and insert them into their other log), edit photos (e.g., crop, resize), and write photo captions. Dr. M was actually able to make students’ quiz scores visible in Veracross before the end of lunch.

Homework: There is no weekend science homework.

Announcements...
