THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE!

SS – G6 Week 03

Lesson 1 - Monday, Feb 9

Today in science: After receiving KWoW #2 at the start of the lesson, students began a new investigation today, INV#5 – Food Molecule Testing. This involved setting up our Science Notebooks properly, but also bringing together last week’s work on atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds with the three macronutrient and two micronutrient molecules we first spoke of back in Nov/Dec. Today’s major focus involved looking closely at the macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Homework: Students were assigned KWoW #2 (Digestion), which is due at the start of Lesson 4.

Lesson 2 - Tuesday, Feb 10

Today in science: We continued setting up INV#5 – Food Molecule Testing by taking a closer look at the micronutrients: vitamins and minerals. We finished our summary table and then shifted out attention to the food we intend to test: Gran Pavesi salted crackers.

Homework: KWoW #2 (Digestion)

Lesson 3 - Wed, Feb 11 (C, D) & Thu, Feb 12 (E)

Today in science: We continued setting up INV#5 – Food Molecule Testing by listing the names of a number of reliable macro- and micro-nutrient food tests and by glueing two blank tables into our notebooks. One of these tables is meant to serve as a sort of introductory guide to the notion of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ test results; the other functions as a place for students to make their pre-investigation ‘predictions’.

Homework: KWoW #2 (Digestion)

Lesson 4 - Friday, Feb 13

Today in science: Dr. M collected this week’s WoW (#2 – Digestion) at the start of the lesson. We then continued setting up INV#5 – Food Molecule Testing by watching a short video of someone performing a number of food tests. The main purpose of watching this video is to gain some familiarity with the general materials and methods involved in food testing, which we will perform in the lab upon our return from next week’s 6th grade MS Swiss Adventure trip.

Homework: As per the TASIS MS school homework policy, there is no weekend science homework (due on Monday).

Announcements...

The UNIT 6.5 (Human Digestion) Driving Question is: What happens to the substances we routinely put into our body?

C & D period homework collection days: Wednesday & Friday.

E period homework collection days: Tuesday & Thursday.

DIGESTION - the process of breaking down food into small, usable nutrient molecules that the body can absorb into the bloodstream for energy, growth, and repair.
