Lesson 1 - Monday, May 18
Today in science: Due to a lost H period class caused by the MS Musical in a previous school week, B & H periods followed different lessons today…
B period began their new unit today by making noticings and wonderings about extra-muscled animals such as cattle, rabbits, fish, mice, and dogs. Students were asked to create an Initial Individual Model on a handout which asked student to 1) make drawings of muscle cells in a) extra-muscled animals and b) normal-muscled animals, and 2) explain how extra-muscled animals become extra-muscled.
H period completed the open model, open note, open work, open book Human Reproduction unit quiz today.
Homework: There is no science homework tonight.
Lesson 2 - Tue, May 19 (B) & Wed, May 20 (H)
Today in science: Due to a lost H period class caused by the MS Musical in a previous school week, B & H periods followed different lessons today…
B period complied their Lesson 1 work to create an Initial Class Model, during which time it was discovered that students lacked some key understanding(s) of animal cells. To address this need, Dr. M asked students to 1) revisit the general shape(s), dimensionality, and structure of animal cells, and 2) recall the names and functions of certain organelles (e.g., cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria). We even made an entry in our notebook to record the names and functions of four major cell organelles.

Lesson 3 - Wed, May 20 (B) & Thu, May 21 (H)
Today in science: Due to a lost H period class caused by the MS Musical in a previous school week, B & H periods followed different lessons today…
B period worked with Mrs. Lill today to link our current model to the ideas of “heredity” and “genetic material.” At the conclusion of this lesson, students could correctly classify various human features such as tattoos, body mass, and eye color as either Heredity or Environment/Lifestyle…or both!

Lesson 4 - Thu, May 21 (B) & Fri, May 22 (H)
Today in science: Due to a lost H period class caused by the MS Musical in a previous school week, B & H periods followed different lessons today…
B period worked with Dr. M to link our current model to the ideas of “genetic material” and “DNA.” In doing so, we discussed animal cell shapes and then began learning about an investigation for next week in which students will attempt to extract the DNA from a fruit (e.g., kiwi or strawberry).
H period worked with Dr. M today to link our current model to the ideas of “heredity” and “genetic material.” At the conclusion of this lesson, students could correctly classify various human features such as tattoos, body mass, and eye color as either Heredity or Environment/Lifestyle…or both!
Homework: As per the TASIS MS school homework policy, there is no science homework due on Monday.
Announcements...
The Driving Question for UNIT 7.6 (Genetics & Heredity) is: How do the instructions in our DNA create BOTH the shared traits that make us a family AND the unique differences that make us an individual?
B period homework collection days: Tuesday & Thursday.
H period homework collection days: Wednesday & Friday.
KWoW - There is no KWow this week, but if there was it would likely be "cells."
