THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE!

SS – G6 Week 09

Lesson 1 - Monday, Mar 18 (All periods)

Focus Question: What happened in the student’s foot so they could walk again?

What We Did…

B & E periods worked on their Initial Healing Model in teams of four. Each team was asked to make a consensus model showing–through both drawings and writing–damaged AND healed skin, bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels (tubes).

G period took time to complete and annotate the Healing Timeline in their science notebook. This including adding two additional rows to the table for “Feeling” and “Pain.” They then began working on their Initial Healing Model in teams of four. Each team was asked to make a consensus model showing–through both drawings and writing–damaged AND healed skin, bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels (tubes).

Homework:

Lesson 2 - Tues, Mar 19 (B & E) & Wed, Mar 20 (G)

Focus Question: What happened in the student’s foot so they could walk again?

What We Did…

All periods completed their Initial Healing Model in teams of four. Each team was asked to make a consensus model showing–through both drawings and writing–damaged AND healed skin, bones, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels (tubes). Teams were also asked to 1) draw a cross-section of a human foot (like a piece of cake) showing the layers of the foot, and 2) record questions (wonderings) about each of the 5 body parts we’ve been discussing and drawing.

Homework:

Lesson 3 - Wed, Mar 20 (B) & Thurs, Mar 21 (E & G)

Focus Question: What happened in the student’s foot so they could walk again?

What We Did…

B period: student teams used a Similarities & Differences table to compare and contrast their Initial Healing Model with those produced by the other teams. We did this so as to create a table-version of our Class Consensus Healing Model to use as the foundation for our work and investigations upon return from the Spring vacation.

E & F periods: through a class discussion, students used a table-version of our Class Consensus Healing Model to use as the foundation for our work and investigations upon return from the Spring vacation. We organized our model according to five body part categories, skin, bones, muscle, blood, and nerves, and each of these five categories contained the following sub-categories: Structure, Function, and It Reminds Me Of…

Homework:

Lesson 4 - Thurs, Mar 21 (B) & Fri, Mar 22 (E & G)

Focus Question: What happened in the student’s foot so they could walk again?

What We Did…

B period: Dr. M introduced students to the five-category, three-sub-category organization system used in both E & G periods. Dr. M then asked the four B period teams to help him reorganize the good work they did Lesson 3 and adapt it to this new organization system. You can see this table-version of our Class Consensus Healing Model, which still needs a bit more work, in the G6 Notes Portal.

E & F periods: We (almost!) completed the final, table-version of our Class Consensus Healing Model. You can now see it in the G6 Notes Portal. With the remaining time in the lesson, we began filling up our Unit 6.3 Jamboard with 1) Related Phenomena, 2) Driving Questions, and 3) Ideas for Investigations.
